Tribal security unit proves efficient in Paktika
SHARANA (Pajhwok): Local officials and residents in southern Paktika province say the deployment of tribal security forces played an important role in improving security of three districts in the province.
About seven years back, US forces helped create a tribal security unit in three districts including Gomal, Shakin and Barmal of Paktika. These security men receive salaries from the US.
Akhtar Mohammad, a resident of Shakin district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that besides improving security, the tribal security unit also helped stop illegal deforestation in the province.
“We are very satisfied with this unit, despite having limited ammunition, they have ensured security very well,” he said.
Mohammad Wali Kharoti, a resident of Gomal district, also said they were satisfied with the performance of the tribal security unit.
“The tribal security forces have ensured our security, they protect their own areas and people, they follow advises from tribal elders, those who work in this unit supports the government,” he said.
Bakhtiar Gul Zadran, Paktika provincial council head, said the deployment of tribal security forces in Gomal, Shakin and Barmal districts had positive outcome.
“These forces are effective in border districts, I ask police and other security forces to follow tribal forces behavior while treating people so people in return assist them,” he said.
Meanwhile, Paktika Governor Mujib Rahman Samkani also said the tribal security unit had been cooperative with security forces.
“The tribal security unit is active in tribal and border areas to keep security for these regions”, he added.
On the other hand, Noor Wali, commander of the tribal security unit in Barmal district, said he commanded 130 people.
“Protecting highways, patrolling, checking unknown people and other security related issues are our responsibilities,” he said.
To a question, he said, “Shortage of weapons is our major problem, neither the US forces nor the Afghan government give us weapons, the ammunition we have now are our own, this problem should be solved.”
Deployment of tribal security forces has a history of 50 years in Paktika and their job is to protect their areas from any security threats.
